Safety Person
Safey Persons are essential to the success of a season. They help keep our players safe and are mandatory to be on the roster and on the bench during each practice and each game. SMHA recommends having more than 2 volunteers be rostered as the team's Safety Persons.
Requirements for Safety Persons include:
- Hockey Canada Registry ID
- Respect in Sport for Hockey Canada Activity Leaders
-
Trainer/Safety - Hockey Canada Safety Program
- Concussion Awareness Training Tool certification
- Criminal Record Check for Vulnerable Sector
Hockey Canada Registry ID
All Voluntees require a Hockey Canada Registry ID number to become a rostered team official as a manager.
The Shift Forward Program (Replacing Respect In Sport Leader)
The Shift Forward is focused on transformational change on how we approach training to achieve creating a safe and welcoming environment and empowering those who engage in the game to manage unhealthy behaviours. The program will cover a variety of topics focused on shifting hockey’s culture forward.
For the 2026-27 season, the modules within the program will cover the following themes: hockey culture, being an active bystander, how to have crucial conversations, autonomy, individual rights, grooming and consent.
Please be sure to take the The Shift Forward for Volunteers and Bench Staff.
Trainer/Safety - Hockey Canada Safety Program
Hockey University is Hockey Canada’s online resource for hockey safety education.
When you register for the course, use the same email address that you used for your Hockey Canada Registry ID to ensure that your results are attached to your ID.
You will have to pay for the course and you will be reimbursed for the expense once you have finished it.
Concussion Awareness Training Tool (CATT)
This 40-minute online course is free for BC Hockey members and is required before taking part in any practice or game. The CATT course can be accessed from the BC Hockey website.
